Counselors
- Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC):
Common in states like Massachusetts, New York, and Florida. - Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC):
Common in states like Texas, Colorado, and Georgia. - Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC):
Common in states like Maryland and Illinois. - Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT):
Common in states like California, Nevada, and Washington. - Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW):
Common in states like California, New York, and Texas.
Psychologists
- Licensed Psychologist (LP):
Typically holds a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) and is licensed to provide psychological assessments and therapy. - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD):
Focuses on clinical practice and is licensed to provide therapy and psychological assessments. - Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology (PhD):
Focuses on both clinical practice and research, is licensed to provide therapy psychological assessments, and is often involved in academia.
Psychiatric License
- Psychiatrist (MD or DO):
Medical doctors specialized in psychiatry, licensed to prescribe medication and provide therapy. - Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PsychNP):
Advanced practice registered nurse with specialized training in psychiatry, licensed to prescribe medication and provide therapy. - Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialist (PCNS):
Advanced practice nurse with specialized training in psychiatric care, licensed to provide therapy and sometimes medication management depending on state laws.
Addiction Counseling Licenses
- Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADAC):
Specializes in treating individuals with substance use disorders and is licensed to provide counseling and treatment plans. - Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC):
Certification for professionals providing counseling and support to individuals with substance use disorders. Licensure requirements vary by state. - Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC):
